f you have spent any time driving through South Tampa lately, you have likely noticed some extra activity along the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. These orange cones and construction crews are part of the South Selmon Capacity Project , a major effort to make our daily commutes smoother and safer.
As our community continues to grow, our infrastructure needs to keep up. Here is a friendly breakdown of what is happening and what we can expect.
The primary objective of this project is to improve the flow of traffic on the southern portion of the Selmon Expressway. By adding extra lanes and upgrading existing structures, the project aims to reduce the "stop and go" congestion that many of us face during rush hour.
Key benefits of the project include:
Increased Capacity: Adding a new lane in each direction between Himes Avenue and the Whiting Street exit.
Enhanced Safety: Modernizing ramps and shoulders to allow for safer merging and emergency access.
Improved Technology: Updating the tolling and communication systems to ensure the roadway operates efficiently for years to come.
The project focuses on the segment of the expressway that connects the Gandy area to Downtown Tampa. While construction can sometimes feel like a hurdle, the team is working hard to minimize disruptions. Most of the heavy lifting is happening within the existing median, which helps keep the current lanes open as much as possible.
Construction is currently in full swing, and the project is expected to continue through the next few seasons. To make the process easier for everyone, here are a few tips for your morning drive:
Watch the Signs: Speed limits are often reduced in work zones. Keeping a steady pace helps protect both you and the workers on site.
Plan Ahead: If you are heading to a flight or an important meeting, give yourself an extra ten minutes of "buffer time" just in case.
Check for Updates: The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) provides regular updates online regarding any temporary lane closures or shift changes.
