If you've ever driven downtown just for a basket of Hattricks wings before a Bolts game, that drive just got a lot shorter. Hattricks South Tampa opened Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 4075 Henderson Blvd. in Culbreath Heights, on the corner lot that used to be Sun Country Cleaners.
The original Hattricks opened at 107 S. Franklin St. in 1997, a few months after the Lightning moved into what was then the Ice Palace, and it has been a pregame fixture ever since. The new Henderson spot is its second location, from owners David Mangione and Steve Mace (the parent company is Slapshot Management Group). Mangione, the general manager and co-owner, told the Tampa Bay Times: "We're excited to be open in South Tampa."
Don't expect a copy of the downtown tavern. This is a smaller, quick-service format: order at the counter or online, then grab a seat or take it home. The Times describes a handful of tables on a covered patio and a few barstool-style seats inside facing the windows.
Start with the wings, sold by the six ($11.75), ten ($19.25) or twenty ($36.50). Go classic Buffalo or old-school Shake & Bake, pick a sauce (mild, medium, lightning, IRA, BBQ or garlic parmesan), or order them Dave's Way: Lightning/Shake & Bake re-tossed in garlic parmesan.
Two items debuted with the opening, according to the Times. The 813 Legend's Steak Sandwich ($18.50) piles shaved ribeye, chive aioli, Cooper Sharp American and provolone onto a warm seeded hoagie roll. The Smash Burger ($15.50) stacks two 4-ounce Niman Ranch patties. And of course there's a South Tampa Club ($16.50), a triple decker of smoked turkey, tavern ham and applewood bacon. Grouper people are covered too, with nuggets, a sandwich and fish and chips.
On the drink side, the Times reports packaged beer and wine, plus ice cream, which may be the sleeper hit on a hot afternoon.
Downtown Hattricks has long been the pregame home base for Lightning fans, and the bar's "every game, every screen" board tracks the Bucs, Rays and Lightning. Henderson is a more casual setup: ownership said earlier that the South Tampa location would have a limited menu, fewer seats and fewer TVs than downtown, with the focus on carryout. Think picking up twenty wings on the way to a neighbor's watch party, or catching a period on the patio.
