Bern's Steak House

Tampa's 70-year-old steak house on Howard, with in-house dry-aged steaks, a huge wine cellar and an upstairs dessert room.

Bern's is marking its 70th anniversary this year. In 1953 Bern and Gert Laxer left New York for California, stopped in Tampa to visit a relative, and stayed. In 1956 they bought the Beer Haven Bar at 1208 S Howard. Money was tight, so they reused letters from the old sign to spell "Bern's." When the phone company required a descriptive listing for the directory, "Steak House" was added. That original room is now the Bordeaux Room.

Now: steaks dry-aged in house for 5 to 8 weeks, 22 caviars, and a cellar the restaurant puts at over half a million bottles (more than 150 wines by the glass). The upstairs dessert room has private booths built from old wine casks, and the restaurant takes dessert-room-only reservations from 6:00 to 6:45 PM.

Dress is business casual to semi-formal. Hours: Sunday and Tuesday to Thursday 5 PM to 10 PM, Friday and Saturday 5 PM to 11 PM, closed Monday.
